(AMZN) has been named one of the 20 most influential people in the world by Forbes magazine for its contributions to philanthropy and entrepreneurship, a feat the tech company says is thanks to its pioneering digital photo album and its global reach.
The book, released Wednesday, notes that Bezos’s Amazon Web Services division has contributed $1.3 billion to philanthropic causes in the U.S. and Canada, while Bezos’s family has given $1 billion to the U,N.
and World Bank.
Bezos’s philanthropy includes a $250 million grant to help support the U-M Research Institute to develop a vaccine for measles.
The Foundation Digital Photos Album, a nonprofit that Bezos founded in 2006, became a global phenomenon, and now includes more than 1.5 billion albums and video clips that have been viewed more than 500 million times, the magazine said.
The magazine says Bezos has also been instrumental in building and sustaining Amazon’s charitable foundations, including the National Institutes of Health’s Center for Advancing Translational Science.
Bezos has endowed more than $5 billion to support research on cancer, heart disease, diabetes and mental health, according to the magazine.
“As the world’s most successful entrepreneur, I can’t imagine being anywhere else in the business,” Bezos said in a statement.
“My family’s philanthropic work has helped make it possible for me to focus on what matters most to me: my customers, employees, and our communities.
Amazon is my life, and it’s a company I’ll always treasure and be proud to be a part of.”
Amazon.com is one of several tech companies that are expanding their philanthropic efforts.
Facebook Inc. is investing $1 million to support the development of a vaccine against the deadly coronavirus.
And Microsoft Corp. is building a global network of health clinics that can help connect patients with specialists.

Amazon, which is known for its Kindle and Fire tablets, has long been a leader in the use of technology to bring people closer to their communities and improve the lives of consumers.
The company recently launched a new, mobile-first, business model that it hopes will revolutionize how consumers access products.
The initiative aims to create a world where people are more likely to have access to affordable goods, while empowering businesses and consumers to innovate.
The foundation’s Digital Photo albums, which offer thousands of photos of objects, are part of the company’s ongoing effort to expand its digital content, and the company said it will work to create more of them.
Bezos said that in the coming years he wants to make the photos available to the public for the first time.
